Curriculum: Lucy Calkins' Units of Study- Teachers College at Columbia University
Both Reading and Writing Workshop begin with a mini-lesson highlighting a specific language arts strategy. Students then have 35-40 minutes of independent work time to practice. In Reading Workshop, students will read books at their independent or "just right" level, applying strategies taught in the lesson. We will confer with them and use a specific teaching point which they will then use in their reading. In Writing Workshop, students will write independently and then confer with the teacher and their writing partner. Students will draft, revise, edit, and publish their written piece.
READING WORKSHOP *Strategy groups: Students who utilize similar reading processes work with the teacher and/or independently in small groups to learn and practice effective strategies for processing a variety of texts. Areas of Focus: *Fluency •Interpreting Characters •Reading the World: Informational •Strategies: Making connections, Questioning, Visualizing, Inferring, Determining Importance, Synthesizing, and Predicting. •Students apply these strategies during their independent reading time. *Book Reviews
